Exploring the gardens and the rock

There are two sides to a Sigiriya visit: the planned landscape at the foot of the rock and the remains above it. Before heading for the stairs, you could take time to look at the pools, garden layout and changing views of the rock. The frescoes and surviving lion entrance add different layers to the visit. Reaching the summit gives you a view of how the royal site sits within the surrounding countryside.

Is the climb right for you?

The ascent involves stairways and exposed sections. Think about your comfort with heights as well as your ability to climb steps, especially if you are travelling with children or someone with limited mobility. A garden-focused visit is an option to discuss if you do not want to go all the way up. Allow space in the day for pauses, water and the descent, rather than planning another demanding walk immediately afterwards.

Combining Sigiriya with other cultural sites

Dambulla and Polonnaruwa offer different experiences: painted cave shrines at Dambulla and a spread-out medieval city at Polonnaruwa. You could choose one as a companion to Sigiriya or spread the visits over several days. If your main interest is photography, history or Buddhist art, tell us which matters most so we can help you decide where to spend your time. Including a visit in your trip

A visit could focus on the gardens and history, or include the climb to the summit. Nearby Dambulla is another option if you would like to see more of the area's Buddhist heritage.
