Dambulla rewards looking beyond individual statues. Paintings follow the cave surfaces, and the arrangement of figures changes how each interior feels. Preparing for the visit

The caves are reached by an uphill approach with steps, so allow for the climb as well as time inside. Comfortable footwear for the approach and clothing suitable for a Buddhist place of worship are worth planning ahead. Dambulla or Sigiriya, or both?

These visits offer different experiences even though they are close enough to consider together. Dambulla centres on enclosed, decorated shrines; Sigiriya combines gardens with a climb to palace remains on a rock summit. Both involve walking uphill if you follow the main visitor routes. You could visit them on separate days, or choose one if you would prefer less climbing. Your interests and energy should guide the plan.
