Reading the remains of a city

Polonnaruwa offers a different kind of visit from a single temple or rock climb. The interest lies in moving between groups of ruins and gradually building a picture of a former capital. You could focus on palace remains, religious buildings or sculpture, rather than trying to see every monument. Gal Vihara gives particular reason to pause and look at the figures carved into the rock, including their different postures and scale.

Walking or cycling between monuments

Because the ruins occupy a broad area, how you move between them matters. Cycling may suit visitors who are comfortable on a bike, while others may prefer a plan with fewer stops and shorter walks. Even with transport between areas, visiting individual monuments involves time on foot. Think about shade, drinking water and breaks, and leave room to spend longer at the places that interest you most.

Building a Cultural Triangle itinerary

Polonnaruwa, Sigiriya and Dambulla show different aspects of Sri Lanka’s past. One centres on a medieval city, another on a royal rock fortress, and the third on living cave shrines. Seeing all three could make sense if history is a main interest, but they do not need to become a race between sites.
